Working hard is the first step to success in college. It is easy to get caught up in the fun of college, so remember you are there for a degree, not to party hard every night. In this note, I will be sharing with you on how you can understand everything in a lecture class, if you really want to do well in college.
When you understand a course in the lecture room, 60% of the work is already done for you. The problem is that most students don’t grab everything while the lecture is going on. Lectures don’t teach, they only lecture.
This is totally different from the normal style of learning you received in high school.
It is not easy to grab everything in a college class. With the help of these tips, you will learn how you can grab everything in lecture classes.
Read before you attend every class.
When you are in college, it is very easy to get caught up with fun. So a lot of students don’t make out time for themselves to study let alone reading each course before attending the class.
But a surefire strategy to understand and flow with the lecturer in the lecture class is to read ahead. When you have not read a topic, you are not qualified to be lectured that topic. If you think you are, you can try and see if you understand anything…
Go with your scheme of work and read ahead. When you come to the lecture class, it will be to ask questions and learn new things from your lecturer. In this our modern age, it is amazing how easy it is to learn.
If you are learning object oriented programming using JAVA and the next topic is constructors. Just type “How to use constructors in Java”, you will be amazed at the kind of websites that are willing to teach you everything you need to know about constructors in Java.
When you read ahead of time, the whole thing will not be new to you again. Obviously many students already know that this works yet they don’t do it. They cannot sacrifice and do what it takes to achieve success in college.
But those that really persevere and do it have their testimonies, excellent performance in college.
Make sure you attend every class.
A lot of students miss lectures and expect everything to be all right for them. The truth is that when you miss lectures, there is no way you will understand everything in the lecture class.
Perhaps, the new topic was a subtopic from the previous class you did not attend. When make out time to attend every lecture, you will be able to flow with the lecturer.
In extreme situations where you cannot attend a lecture, make out time to meet your friends and ask them to explain what they learnt to you.
Don’t be silent and pretend everything is fine. A lot of times, discussions at the lecture class are used on examination. Don't depend on your handout because you may not understand or get all the whole information you may need.
When you are consistent in the lecture class, it will be very difficult for you to leave a course without grabbing something about it.
Do not show up late to classes.
Do not show up late to classes. If you want to understand everything in the lecture room, you must come early and begin the class with your lecturer. Any class you show up late, you cannot understand everything from that class, I am a living witness.
Nowadays, many professors factor attendance and class participation into the final grade. There is no reason to miss out on these points.
Be an active listener.
Learn how to be an active listener in class. Take notes diligently and try to pay attention; you will need these notes for the final examination and they will help you remember things.
Taking a note while in class also makes you to pay attention and assimilate what the lecturer is talking about so you can jot it down. It will also help you when writing essays.
A lot of students stay in class and they don’t know what is actually going on.
Don’t be like spectators in the class; learn to be an active listener. Ask questions when you don’t understand something and put down as much information as you can in your jotter.
Buy all the books your lecturer recommends.
Buy all the books your lecturer recommends, even if you don’t think you will use them. There is a reason he or she wants you to have them. Besides, if you can lay hands on the very same materials they use to teach you, it will be a very big plus both in class and in examination.
Teach others what you learnt.
Joseph Joubert once said that "To teach is to learn twice." When you teach others, you don’t only know more, you become a master. To master everything in your lecture class, look for people that are complaining about the lecture you had in the class and teach them what you understood from the class.
You will be amazed at the new ideas and new understanding that will come as you teach them. You will end up helping your friends and yourself. Find a way to discuss what you have learnt with others, if you don’t find anyone, teach yourself.
Schooling can be likened to a full time job. You have paid to be taught and to be taught well. If you are in class and you couldn't grab anything, it means you are not doing your job well.
The money you paid for the lecture will go for a waste. So it is in your best interest to understand everything taught in the lecture class. With this tips, I believe you can always be a step ahead of the game if you make up your mind to work toward it.
