Born at Apinkra, near Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Prof. Kofi Oduro-Afriyie was educated at Sekondi College, Sekondi. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Physics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi; an M.Sc. (Physics) degree from the University of Cape Coast and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Calabar, Nigeria.
He also holds a Certificate in Advanced Leadership Skills from Haggai Institute, Maui, Hawaii, USA; and a Certificate in Biblical Theology from the Berea International Institute in Seoul, South Korea.
Professor Oduro-Afriyie is the Vice-Chancellor of Wisconsin International University College (WIUC), Ghana. Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of WIUC, he served as Vice President (Academic) of Central University College, Accra. He also served previously as Head of the Department of Physics and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Ghana, Legon.
He had earlier served as a Research Associate in Agroclimatology at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria. He also lectured at the University of Calabar, Nigeria and the University of Liberia, Monrovia, Liberia, before joining the University of Ghana.
Professor Oduro-Afriyie is a Fellow of the Ghana Institute of Physics and a member of the Society of African Physicists & Mathematicians. He was also a member of the New York Academy of Sciences; and a Senior Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. For his outstanding achievements in Physics, he was listed in Marquis Who's Who in the World in 1998 and 1999 and Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 2000.
Many Ghanaians remember the Professor in connection with the eclipse of March 29, 2006. Before that day, he was on Ghana Television (GTV), in his capacity as an Atmospheric Physicist and Head of the Department of Physics at the University of Ghana, to inform the nation of arrival of the eclipse.
“The eclipse” he said, “would start from the north-eastern end of Brazil, cut across the Atlantic Ocean, and enter Africa through Sekondi-Takoradi.” He also gave the exact time of arrival, and duration of the eclipse. Everything happened exactly as he said.
The Professor gave his life to Jesus on April 28, 1976. He has planted a number of Churches and Fellowships. These include the Christian Fellowship at the ICTP in Trieste, Italy; the Assemblies of God Church at the State Housing Estate, Calabar, Nigeria; and the Fendall Chapel at Fendall in Monrovia, Liberia.
He is currently Associate Pastor at the Trinity Temple Assemblies of God, Community 10, Tema, Ghana.
